New York City FC champions for the first time

New York City FC won the American championship for the first time eight years after it was founded. The US offshoot of the City Football Group from Abu Dhabi, owner of the English top team Manchester City, defeated hosts Portland Timbers 4-2 on penalties in the Major League Soccer final. After 120 minutes the score was 1: 1.

The Argentine Valentin Castellanos (41.) gave New York the lead in Providence Park. Felipe Mora (90 + 4) saved the Timbers in extra time, which brought no decision.

New York goalkeeper Sean Johnson became the match winner with two saved shots on penalties.

The NYCFC had won the play-offs of the Eastern Conference from fourth place with the former Bundesliga professional Alfredo Morales (Hertha BSC, Fortuna Düsseldorf), ex-champions Portland prevailed in the west and had home rights as the better team in the points round. Defending champion Columbus Crew had missed the play-offs of the MLS.
