On the night of Saturday to Sunday, New York City FC were crowned MLS champions after defeating the defending defenders Portland Timbers after their victory in the MLS Is Back tournament held during the pandemic. This is the first time that the New York franchise has won this trophy since its creation in 2013, two years before acquiring professional status.

If his Argentine top scorer Valentin Castellanos first opened the scoring at the end of the first period (1-0, 41st), the Bronx Blues were surprised at the very end of the game by the Chilean Felipe Mora (1-1, 90th + 4). There followed a penalty shootout marked by three misses on the first four attempts, before Peruvian Alexander Callens sealed the victory for the NYCFC as fifth shooter.
