New York City Executive Order Creates New Immigration Subplot

The executive order issued by the City of New York to avoid the surprise and massive arrival of buses with asylum seekers, sent from Texas, creates a new subplot in the immigration crisis. In the last hours, 13 buses have disembarked more than 500 immigrants in New Jersey. All of these people ended up arriving in the Big Apple, via trains, to request shelter.

The units have arrived at several stations in the counties of Secaucus, Fanwood, Edison y Trenton, where the mayors had diverse reactions, on how to face this incidence, if this flow of people continues.

Some mayors of regions neighboring New York confirmed this Tuesday that they will issue executive orders to prevent the disorderly transit of immigrants, at a time when the border There are thousands of people trying to enter.

In general, none were open to financing shelters. Of course, they make it clear that they do not want to repeat the history of the humanitarian chaos that New York City is suffering from.

This new incident occurred because a week ago, Mayor Eric Adams issued a measure for charter buses that transport immigrants from border states to notify the City government with 32 hours in advance of your arrival.

To the date, The arrival of any bus has not been previously reported.

In this sense, Lisa Zornberg from the Mayor’s Advisory Teamemphasized that “not a single bus” sent from Texas has complied with this executive order, they simply “evade” it by sending immigrants to New Jersey.

“Other measures will come”

For his part, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that other cities will continue to approve new regulations to block the approach of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who since spring 2022 has been sending immigrants en masse They have crossed the southern border to sanctuary cities, such as Chicago and New York.

“We are dealing with a person who only wants to disrupt. This is an evil way to use people and disrupt other cities. We will continue to send a clear message to these bus operators. They should not participate in Governor Abbott’s actions,” Adams said this Tuesday in his first press conference this year.

The mayor announced that other executive measures will come to counteract the arrival of immigrants, without any coordination. And to do this, he will work in alliance with other mayors and governors of the country.

In the midst of this new maelstrom, the mayor of Edison, Sam Joshi, was frontal when warning on his social networks that he will take measures to “keep away” immigrants who arrive with the intention of being a burden to that county. He threatened to transport them back to the US-Mexico border.

“Over the years I have expressed my disagreement with the concept of sanctuary cities and states and will not allow Edison to be subjected to its consequences. For me the solution will not be to hand them over to another mayor.”he asserted.

In a contrary position, the Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulopwas more open to not turning his back on the newcomers, stressing that finally “Most of these people come here, because they are also desperate for safety, food and life. We must be smart in how we approach this. And have a solution at the state level.”

Also, the Governor Phil Murphy confirmed in a statement to local media that “New Jersey is primarily used as a transit point for these familiesall continued their travels en route to their final destination in New York City.”

None of the counties in the ‘Garden State’ have rules that require them to guarantee people the right to shelter if they say they have nowhere to sleep. Exactly a policy in force in the Big Apple, for 40 years, that Mayor Adams reiterated this Tuesday must be urgently reviewed.

NYC: We want more coordination

The municipal authorities of New York City emphasize that they only want to receive prior information about who and how many are coming in these transportation units, in order to coordinate the availability of municipal services such as shelters, which are completely collapsed.

Adams was blunt in assuring that after almost two years of this crisis, measures will continue to be taken until national decompression is achieved and the federal government is motivated to take action to prevent a limited group of cities, pay the consequences of a global migration crisis.

“We just ran out of space. If we don’t stop this somehow, with a national strategy and by calling for a review of our laws, “We will see hundreds sleeping on the street.”Adams said.

The municipal president cited in a radio program that aspects such as the “destabilization of Venezuela”, continues to flood certain cities in the country with thousands and thousands of people arriving requesting shelter, food, clothing and medical services.

“It is unfair that only a small group of cities are addressing this national problem. That is why we want to insist on the twist that we must give to the norm of ‘right to refuge’, because it is unsustainable and unfair for New Yorkers, as it is conceived,” he reiterated.

This position caused spokespersons for organizations that help immigrants to react.

“New year, new attacks by Mayor Adams against our communities. The mayor openly admitted his desire to undermine another long-standing policy that defines New York City. Most New Yorkers Support Our Sanctuary City Policywhich ensures that our city can be a beacon of hope and security for anyone who calls it home,” he highlighted. Murad Awawdeh, director of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC).

The data:

  • Approximately 500 immigrants arrived in New Jersey counties in recent days as a transit route to continue their goal of reaching NYC to request shelter and services.
