In the US east coast metropolis of New York, millions of people are called to elect a new mayor. The polling stations are open from 6 a.m. (local time / 11 a.m. CET) to 9 p.m. (local time / Wednesday 3.00 a.m. CET). The first results of the vote in the largest city in the United States are not expected until Wednesday morning (CET) at the earliest. The Democrat Eric Adams (61) is a strong favorite.
Brooklyn’s district president is likely to win the liberal stronghold with more than eight million inhabitants in front of his Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa (67), founder of a citizens’ initiative for more safety on the streets. The election campaign between the two men was marked by personal attacks – that’s how Adams called Sliwa a racist, who in turn described him as elitist.
–
Politically, too, the two candidates for the highest office in New York City have very different ideas. While the moderate Adams wants to at least keep the controversial six billion budget of the police in check, Sliwa announced that he wants to hire 3,000 new workers. In addition, Sliwa, who is known for wearing a red beret, wants to abolish the corona vaccination requirement for public employees and restaurant visitors – Adam plans to keep this.
–
Both politicians want to succeed Bill de Blasio (Democrats), who can no longer run as mayor after two terms in office. New York City is the cultural and financial center of the United States and around the world. In the USA, the metropolis is also politically more important than other cities. It is considered a yardstick for progressive politics.
–
In addition to the office of mayor, the new head of the district attorney’s office and new members of the city council will be determined on Tuesday in New York. A number of possible constitutional changes will also be decided – including one for the right to pure air, clean water and a healthy environment.
