Formula E is back in New York City – maybe for the last time. In the “Big Apple” too, the race stewards have the task of checking whether all participants are complying with the technical and sporting regulations. Should there be a violation, it is up to them to determine the penalty.
Steve Pence, Mathieu Remmerie and Michael Schwägerl take on this task at the New York City E-Prix. As in Berlin, they will be supported by ex-driver Pedro Lamy, who has never contested a Formula E race but has a lot of experience in GT and endurance racing. As usual, below is a breakdown of all the stewards’ decisions at race one of the 2022 New York City E-Prix.
Penalties in qualifying
- Antonio Giovinazzi got two lap times canceled because he had used more than the maximum permitted 220 kW of power in qualifying. However, since the overrun occurred on his fourth timed lap, it didn’t affect the result. Due to the onset of rain, these lap times were significantly slower than those set by Giovinazzi at the beginning of the session.
- Oliver Askew was moved back three grid positions for the race. He also received two penalty points on his racing license. The American in Andretti’s service had been speeding during the red flag waved due to Sergio Sette Camara’s accident. The rules state that in the event of a red flag, vehicles on the track must comply with the pit lane speed limit (50 km/h). Askew claimed to have forgotten to press the appropriate button on the steering wheel.
Penalties during and after the race
- Other Lotteries subsequently received a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Antonio Felix da Costa. As a result, the Porsche driver fell back from 13th to 16th place. He also received two penalty points on his racing license. Felix da Costa retired as a result of the contact with a puncture on the left rear.
- Oliver Askew subsequently received a drive-through penalty which was converted to a time penalty of 21 seconds for using attack mode only once in the race. The rules for New York Saturday stated that the extra energy had to be activated twice. There were no mitigating circumstances for Askew due to the early termination of the race.
