Next year, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) plans to install a network of at least 500 secure bicycle parking spaces.
“With record numbers of cyclists and an unprecedented number of protected bike lanes, New York City is experiencing a successful cycling renaissance,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez. “This initiative will support the continued growth of cycling by addressing a key barrier for the bike owner: lack of access to secure bike storage.”
Secure parking with public access will support the highest ridership in the state’s counties and the continued growth of New York City. The first step of this initiative was taken with an open call to identify a company to operate this innovative bicycle storage network.
With more than 600,000 bike trips made in the city each day and a record number of protected lanes across the five boroughs, safe access to bike parking will continue to drive New Yorkers’ adoption of cycling, which means a safe and environmentally friendly transport option. .
This secure bike storage network is essential because many New Yorkers don’t store bikes in their homes or can’t carry electric bikes or heavier cargo up the stairs of apartment buildings – major barriers to bike ownership.
For all New Yorkers
The agency will install storage spaces evenly across the five boroughs to ensure that all New Yorkers experience the benefits of bicycling.
“As more people ride bikes to get around, including heavier and more expensive electric bikes, we need to create infrastructure for safe and convenient storage as one of the best and most important on our roads,” said Deputy Mayor for Works, Meera Joshi. “New York must be built for people, with the density our growing city needs. “These lockers will create many more spaces for New Yorkers’ transportation needs on our limited freeway.”
“Providing safe parking for residents is critical to ensuring more New Yorkers walk, bike and use public transit, which helps reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.” glass,” said Elijah Hutchinson, executive director of the Office of the Minister’s Climate and Environmental Justice Bureau.
The priorities
Once an operator is selected, NYC DOT hopes to have the first storage locations available next year and to have all 500 stations installed within five years. NYC DOT will prioritize storage locations and design for:
.Improve bike parking near major transit hubs
.Provide options to accommodate electric and cargo bikes.
.Offer long-term storage in residential areas for New Yorkers without a storage space.
. The cost of e-bikes could be included in storage facilities.
