New York City Doesn’t Even Make Top 100 Places to Live, Study Says – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – A new annual list published by US News & World Report this week identifies America’s best metropolitan areas to live in 2022-23, and no place in New York City made the top 100 most desirable places, it found. the study.

US News analyzed the 150 most populous metropolitan areas in the country on a variety of factors to assess four key indexes (job market, value, quality of life, and desirability) on a weighted scale to determine the “best” places to live next year.

Only six “metropolitan” areas from all three states made the top 100, and only one made the top 30: Albany in 21st place. The capital city of New York was helped in the ranking by high scores in quality of life and value of indices. Learn more about the methodology here.

What are the other local places featured in the latest US News list? Syracuse ranked 38th, driven primarily by its high-value index. Next up was Rochester (No. 42), followed by Buffalo (No. 45), Connecticut’s Hartford (No. 47) and New Jersey’s Trenton (No. 86). (New York City is at number 120, for those who were wondering.)

A low-value index, which is hardly surprising, given that home prices have soared while gun violence is at its highest point in 25 years, and a high rate of net migration pushed the five boroughs down. .

Each index considers a number of factors: unemployment rate and median wage for job, combined annual median income rate and combined annual housing cost by value, and a public poll of convenience. The quality of life index, the one with the highest weighting of the group (32.5%), is also the most complete, considering in its evaluation crime rates, access to medical care, education, well-being, air quality and travel time.

Net migration is also factored in, though it matters much less (5%) on the scale than other US News metrics. After quality of life, the value index has the greatest weight in the 2022-23 ranking (25%), followed by the labor market (20%) and the desirability indices (17.5%).

So, which metropolitan areas are the best to live in the United States? Huntsville, Alabama, earned top honors, primarily thanks to high rankings in the labor market and value indexes.

Colorado Springs, Colorado, lauded for its desirability, took second place, with Green Bay, Wisconsin, Boulder, Colorado, and San Jose, California rounding out the top five. See the full ranking of US News & World Report’s “Best Places to Live” here.
