New York City Declares War on Short-Term Renters: Airbnb Offer Severely Restricted

The City of New York has declared war on short-term renters and is taking action to discourage the misappropriation of short-term rentals. A new law for the state of New York will massively restrict the Airbnb offer from September 5th.

The new rule requires hosts to officially register with the city authority. They must also be present at the home themselves if paying guests are staying on site for less than 30 consecutive days. In addition, no more than two paying guests may be accommodated at the same time. Violations of these rules are subject to fines of up to $5,000.

Airbnb currently offers almost 40,000 accommodations in New York City – the majority of these offers are likely to disappear from the market as a result of the new regulation, the report goes on to say. Tourists then have to make do with hotels again.

For Airbnb, the decision means a significant loss of revenue, as New York is one of the company’s most profitable booking markets. In addition, the introduction of such restrictions in New York could encourage other cities to take similar measures. Cities like Barcelona, London, Munich, Paris, San Francisco, Singapore, Tokyo and Vancouver have already enacted similar laws to curb uncontrolled vacation rentals.

Most recently, Vienna tightened its building regulations. From July 1, 2024, apartments there may only be rented to tourists for 90 days. (Tageskarte reported) The Italian city of Florence is also planning to ban short-term rentals of apartments in its historic city center. (Daily ticket reported).
