New York City Crackdown: Bill Aims to Eliminate Illegal Car Wash Operations

NEW YORK — Illegal car wash locations in New York City could end.

This due to a bill introduced by Councilman Rafael Salamanca that would allow the Department of Sanitation to impose civil penalties for the unlicensed operation of a mobile car wash. It would also allow the Department of Sanitation to tow and remove vehicles and equipment used to operate unlicensed mobile car washes. Owners of towed vehicles and equipment may be charged for the cost of towing and storing the vehicles and equipment.

The measure comes after complaints have mainly been reported in The Bronx because they block the platforms, do not allow the Department of Sanitation to clean the streets and take up important city resources such as hydrants.

“What has been increasing in terms of complaints in my office are these illegal car washes,” Salamanca told news 12.

The bill seeks to ensure that places that are operating illegally are informed of how to acquire a license, and would give them a period of 30 days to obtain it.
