New York City Council member Yusef Salaam did not participate in an invitation from Mayor Eric Adams to an event on the “how many more arrests” bill. This comes after Salaam was stopped by a patrol car on Friday night.
In an apparent routine check, the newly elected councilman for Harlem was stopped by a patrol car from Precinct 26. According to the police report, the car had Georgia plates, in addition to a dark tint on the vehicle’s windows, an illegal detail in NY.
The situation occurred after 6:00 pm, between 125th streets and 12th avenue. He was accompanied by his family.
Councilor Yusef Salaam issues a statement after what happened
During Saturday, the councilman alleged in a statement that NYPD officers did not give him a reason. These were his words:
“Last night, while I was driving with my wife and children and listening to a call from my Council colleagues over the loudspeaker, an NYPD officer stopped me in my beloved town of Harlem, within the 28th precinct.”
“I introduced myself as Councilman Yusef Salaam and subsequently asked the officer why I had been stopped. Instead of answering my question, the officer said, ‘We’re done here,’ and proceeded to walk away.”
“In light of this meeting and coupled with the lack of logistical details provided by Mayor Adams’ office in advance, I will no longer participate in tonight’s scheduled trip with the Mayor and the NYPD,” added Council Member Yusef Salaam, one of the “Central Park Five.”
“The officer conducted himself in a professional manner,” the NYPD says in another statement.
As a response to the Harlem councilman’s written statements, the NYPD decided to issue another statement highlighting the “professional” attitude of the officer who carried out the check.
Additionally, they included the officer’s body camera video and a copy of the traffic stop report.
“The officer conducted himself in a professional and respectful manner. This officer should be commended for his polite, professional and respectful conduct and for using his discretion appropriately so that the councilman can complete his official duties,” reads part of the statement.
Regarding Mayor Eric Adams’ veto of the police checks bill, the local authority mentioned that the new mandates would harm police work.
“We don’t want to tie the hands of the police, but rather the criminals. That is the objective. We must make sure that we do not prevent them from doing their job,” he emphasized.
