New York City Bans TikTok on City-Controlled Devices Due to Security Concerns

New York has decided to ban TikTok on devices that are controlled by the city, believing that the social network presents “a threat to the security of the city’s technical networks”.

City employees are no longer allowed to download or use the TikTok app on New York-owned devices or access the social network’s website. New York State previously banned the use of TikTok on state-issued devices, but some employees could still use it for marketing purposes.

“While social media is a great way to connect New Yorkers with each other and with the city, we need to make sure we always use these platforms in a safe way”a spokesperson for New York City Hall said in a statement to The Verge. “NYC Cyber Command regularly explores and offers proactive measures to keep New Yorkers’ data secure”.

The use of TikTok has already been banned on devices and systems in several regions, including France, the European Union, the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and more.

The state of Montana in the United States has gone even further by banning TikTok for all residents of the region. “To protect the personal and private data of users from the Chinese Communist Party, I banned TikTok in Montana”had indicated Greg Gianforte, the governor of this state of the North-West which counts a little more than a million inhabitants.
