New York City begins the second stage of reopening businesses and offices on Monday. Thousands of workers are allowed to return to work for the first time since March. The pandemic had forced companies to send their employees home and prioritize teleworking. The inhabitants of the Big Apple can once again visit the restaurant (only outside), the hairdresser and the barber.
Certain in-store purchases are permitted, including at the famous Macy’s store. Real estate agencies can also resume service.
“The first phase was considerable, but the second is a real giant leap for this city. It concerns most of our economyNew York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference, with particular reference to the restaurant industry.
He announced that around 300,000 people are expected to return to their posts during this second stage of reopening (the recovery plan has four), introduced two weeks after the city began to relax containment measures. Broadway museums and theaters will remain closed until the fourth and final stop.
The city, the largest and densest in the country, has had to deal with more than 22,000 deaths allegedly or confirmed to Covid-19. In recent days, the death toll is below 10 and infections are on the decline, but at least 100 cases of the coronavirus are still recorded every day.
Meanwhile, many other US states are battling peaks in the virus.
