During this long Easter weekend, the streets of New York are quiet and less busy, far from the hubbub and the usual permanent traffic jams. A rare vision that city officials want to make a daily reality: thanks to the new urban toll, they hope to reduce the number of vehicles by 20%.

The project is supported by the Transportation Alternative organization of which Alexa Sledge is a member: “ New York is the most congested city in the country. With all these cars on our roads, the air is highly polluted. Ambulances trying to get to the hospital get stuck in traffic, buses and people in them too! »

But having to pay fifteen dollars to pass below 60th Street is not to everyone’s taste. Especially those who work in the affected area. “ Imagine having to pay fifteen dollars to go to work and your company won’t reimburse you. That does not make any sense. I’ll have to limit other expenses to cover this one! », enrages a worker. “ I am furious ! Going to Manhattan, with the tolls that are already on the bridges, will cost thirty dollars. And we’re going to pay for parking! It’s going to be expensive in the end! It makes no sense ! », added another.

For the moment, the commissioning of this new toll is scheduled for June 15, but the date could be postponed due to legal proceedings launched by opponents of the project. Moreover, this urban toll project has become a sea serpent that has been running for several years already.
