New York, one of the most expensive cities in the world but also one of the most visited, does not give up attracting tourists with the most modest budgets, with an offer of free activities and others at lower prices than those usually found. in the Big Apple.
“When we come to New York City, we generally think of super-high budgets to be able to enjoy this city, but the reality is that New York offers many possibilities for people to enjoy at low or free cost,” Adriana Aristizabal told EFE. spokesman for New York City Tourism, the company that sponsors tourism in the metropolis.
In addition to the beaches, parks and architecture that can be enjoyed in the city, Aristizabal highlights the concerts and open-air film projections, as well as the different street festivals that are held in the five districts of the city from 29 of July.
One of the places that invites you to enjoy the New York summer in the open air is Bryant Park, where every Monday until August 21 there is an open-air cinema, as well as about twenty concerts between June and September.
Activities that can be witnessed from the large grass esplanade with which this park is dressed from spring to autumn and which replaces the ice skating rink that in the winter months occupies the same place in the park.
But one of the biggest musical attractions in the city are the concerts on the “Summerstage” stage in Central Park, with a busy weekly schedule that runs from June 10 to September 30.
A total of 80 concerts, most of them free, host this summer stage, where singers such as Juanes have already paraded -who was forced to suspend his performance due to the excessive number of fans who came to see his performance- and where the country music singer Tanya Tucker or the Brazilian Marisa Monte.
Jazz lovers also have the Charlie Parker festival that hosts a dozen free concerts from August 20 to 27 in different parts of the city.
Activities that spring up everywhere at this time, such as in the small “Grace Plaza”, where every Thursday in the summer free performances are offered between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., although these are more aimed at entertaining lunchtime for office workers in the middle Manhattan, used to having lunch at those hours.
Aristizabal also recalls that between July 24 and August 20, what is known as “New York Restaurant Week” is celebrated, an initiative through which six hundred restaurants in the city offer a menu for a fixed price of 30, 45 or $60 (without drinks).
The spokeswoman for the city’s tourism agency recommends planning a trip to the city of at least a week, especially if it is your first visit.
“To come to New York for the first time, I would recommend a week, because it is a gigantic city. It has a great cultural offer, an architectural offer of exceptional public places, so a week would be recommended,” he insists.
Asked about the budget for accommodation, she assures that hotel rooms can be found from 180 to 200 dollars per night, a price that is certainly not very affordable for many pockets.
And for those who prefer the winter cold to the humid summer heat, Aristizabal recalls that in February, coinciding with the low tourist season, the “NYC Winter Outing” is held between mid-January and mid-February, two fortnights of offers in restaurants, museums, hotels and Broadway shows.
