New York Chinatown to Undergo $56 Million Redesign Initiative, Transforming Public Space and Improving Safety

“For too long, Chinatown residents, neighbors and tourists have had to deal with confined public spaces and dangerous intersections in Chatham/Kimlau Square, but those days are coming to an end,” said the mayor Adams at a press conference from Chinatown, where he mentioned that the project seeks to create shorter street intersections, more public space, simple intersections and direct connections for cyclists.

“We will beautify Park Row, making it easier for New Yorkers and tourists to get from the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge to Chinatown and all the small businesses here, and we will give Chinatown the entrance it deserves with a new welcoming gate that honors the rich heritage cultural of this neighborhood,” added the mayor. “Every step of the way, we will work hand in hand with the local community of Chinatown so that the project reflects what the community wants and needs from our city.”

The plan, which hopes to be completed in 2029seeks to put an end to unsafe crossings that daily affect drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in that part of the Big Apple where Chatham/Kimlau Square It has a five-point intersection with complex traffic.

Municipal authorities stated that in 2024, in consultation with the Chinatown community, the local administration will initiate a traffic study to inform details about the redesign.

“Today we celebrate the launch of three unique Chinatown Downtown Revitalization Initiative projects that together will reinvent Kimlau Square as a safe and engaging community destination, celebrate Chinatown’s local culture, and invite visitors back to restaurants. and local Chinatown businesses,” the state official said. “These now-enhanced projects, along with the other eight DRI-funded community projects, will ensure that local residents witness greater beneficial impact for the neighborhood.”
