New York car thief hits bicyclist and crashes into tree after shooting

A car thief in the Bronx struck and seriously injured a cyclist before crashing into a tree Thursday night, police said.

Before the chaotic finale, which led to his arrest, the suspect was involved in another accident while driving a Mercedes, cops said.

The suspect collided with another car at Kingsbridge Road and Heath Avenue at around 3pm before being shot and killed by an unidentified man, authorities said.

It is not known whether the killer was the driver of the other car.

The Mercedes driver then fled the scene and hijacked a gray Honda Accord, eventually crashing into a 47-year-old cyclist, the NYPD said.

The car thief eventually hit a tree and was arrested on pending charges, police said.

The cyclist was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition, police said.

The shooter has not been arrested, police said.

The NYPD did not immediately know the ages or genders of the two individuals Thursday night.
