31 shows are stopped
- While the coronavirus epidemic in New York has declined sharply, allowing the launch of phase 2 of deconfinement, the situation remains complicated for Broadway theaters. The Broadway League, the professional association of the theater industry, announces that Broadway musicals will be suspended until January 3, 2021. A decision linked to the consequences of Covid-19.
- Even though the health situation has improved markedly in New York City, theaters cannot effectively apply social distancing. However, a degraded occupancy rate endangers the profitability of shows. The 31 musicals playing on Broadway have been on standby since March 12, 2020, whether it’s The Lion King, Chicago, Aladdin or the inevitable Phantom of the Opera.
Health measures are being adopted
- The Broadway League has also announced that it is working on a whole series of measures to allow the resumption of shows on January 3, 2021. Theaters will thus adopt procedures for cleaning and disinfecting rooms. Health protocols must also be put in place behind the scenes. And the association is considering the deployment of temperature detection gates for spectators and employees.
- “The Broadway experience is deeply personal, but it is also, and above all, a collective experience,” explains Thomas Schumacher, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Broadway League. “The chemistry of 1,000 strangers brought together in one audience that cheers on every performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theaters can safely accommodate full venues,” he continues.
