New York / Boston / Toronto: in case of a tie in the standings, Red Sox advantage

We are currently witnessing a fight to finish in the race for the best runner-up in the American League. Currently, there is a triple tie for the last two ranks leading to a place in the playoffs.

If the trend continued until the last day of this campaign and the triple equality continued, then we would be entitled to quite a spectacle.

Indeed, under these circumstances, the Boston Red Sox could then choose to act as Team A, B or C. The Toronto Blue Jays would have the second decision and then the Yankees would take the remaining position.

It is because of the tiebreaker (Boston has won more games against its direct opponents, namely New York and Toronto) that this is how it will be in the event of a tie in the standings.

It was then that everything would become interesting. Once the choices have been made, Team A would host a match against Team B. The winner would take first place of best runner-up.

The loser should then travel to Team C’s home for another match to determine the second team to take part in the best runner-up suicide match.

The decision seems obvious to make, since teams A and B have two chances to qualify. However, a team could choose to occupy the C position to host the qualifying match, in addition to sparing its pitchers.

Consider a fictitious scenario. The Red Sox choose to occupy the rank A. They therefore face the Jays. Following a loss, they would be forced to go to Yankee Stadium to ensure their survival. If they came out on the winning side, then they would have to return to the Rogers Center for another meet. Even if they were to win that other game, the Red Bottoms would arrive in Tampa Bay for their three of five streak completely exhausted.

The decision could therefore be of capital importance. However, we are not there yet and a lot can happen by the end of the season. However, the possibility is there.
