Bishop Lamor Whitehead, a friend of New York Mayor Eric Adams, was arrested and charged with fraud and extortion. Whitehead allegedly cheated one of his parishioners out of his life savings.
New York bishop Lamor Whitehead faces a lawsuit, which includes fraud and extortion charges for allegedly cheating a 56-year-old woman out of all of her $90,000 retirement savings to buy luxuries for him, too. last July.
Earlier this morning, Whitehead, a friend of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, was arrested and is now due in federal court today before US Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein. The case is assigned to US District Judge Lorna G. Schofield.
Prosecutors say Whitehead also extorted $5,000 from a businessman and attempted to loan him $500,000 in exchange for “favorable action from the New York government, which Whitehead knew he could get.”
According to CNBWhitehead came to international prominence earlier this year when $1 million worth of jewelry was stolen from him during a live-streamed church service.
US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams and Michael J. Driscoll, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the FBI’s New York Field Office, announced the charges against Whitehead.
During the announcement, Williams said, “As we report today, Lamor Whitehead abused a parishioner’s trust in him, intimidated a businessman for $5,000, then attempted to defraud much more and lied to federal agents”. His campaign of fraud and deceit now stops.
Whitehead now faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
