New York below 100 dead in 24 hours

(Washington) The death toll from the novel coronavirus recorded in New York state has fallen to 84 in the past 24 hours, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday, the lowest toll since March 24.

“This is good news,” the governor said during his daily briefing. Hospitalizations, intubations, new infections: the decline continues, he said.

“In my head, I always said to myself that we had to go below 100”, he added. “It shows that we are making progress.”

At the peak of the pandemic in this state, the most affected in the United States, in the first half of April, authorities had recorded more than 1,000 deaths per day.

Part of the state where the virus is not very active has started to deconfin itself, but restrictions have not yet been lifted in New York City.

The beaches of the metropolis will thus remain closed for this long weekend which traditionally marks the beginning of the summer season in the United States, Monday being a holiday (Memorial Day).

Elsewhere in the state and other coastal areas, beaches will be open, often with physical distancing instructions.

After a lawsuit, Andrew Cuomo also allowed gatherings of up to 10 people on Friday evening.
