REPORTAGE
A new step towards a return “to normal” for New York, formerly the epicenter of the Covid-19 epidemic in the United States. The city is entering the second phase of its economic recovery plan, which has four, with the reopening of non-essential businesses. The day was eagerly awaited by the inhabitants of the Big Apple, including by the youngest: the outdoor play areas, or playground, are available again from this Monday. However, schools remain closed.
Hairdresser, terrace restaurants and play areas
Older New Yorkers, meanwhile, rushed to the hairdresser. Benoit Peyrouse has just reopened the doors of his Brooklyn living room, equipped with his mask and protective visor. “It’s extraordinary, today is really a fun day”, he confides. “Three months without work, without being able to make a turnover is very complicated, especially in New York paying rent. People looked every day when we were going to reopen, and when we sent an e-mail and posted on Instagram, thirty minutes later we were full for two weeks! “
Good humor and relief prevail, despite the persistent ban on caring for beards. This would require removing the mask.
A careful deconfinement, to avoid a relapse
Restaurants can also serve, but only on the terrace or to take away. On the side of the Manhattan buildings, the offices are once again accessible to employees.
But make no mistake: New York is reopening slowly and cautiously to avoid a relapse. The city, heavily bereaved with nearly 22,000 dead from the new coronavirus, is now an exception. Coronavirus cases are on the rise in the United States, with + 15% in recent weeks, mainly in southern and western states that have reopened too quickly, such as Texas and Florida.
