New York announced Wednesday that it will require all state employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before Labor Day, Sept. 6, or to be tested for the virus weekly.
The mandate for frequent inoculation or testing for government workers makes New York the third government entity to issue such a requirement. California, Nevada and New York City announced similar policies earlier this week.
“It’s smart, it’s fair, and it’s in everyone’s interest,” Governor Andrew Cuomodijo said in a Zoom call Wednesday with the nonprofit Association for a Better New York.

New York, like other states, has seen a growing number of coronavirus cases related to the Delta variant. New infections have risen more than 400 percent since the end of June.
