New York becomes the first state to enact abortion rights | Abroad

New York wants to enshrine abortion and birth control rights in state law, reports de Volkskrant Saturday. The state Senate passed a bill to that effect on Friday. The US Supreme Court recently abolished the nation’s right to abortion.

The US Supreme Court decision now allows each state to decide whether or not to allow abortions. About 20 states are considering banning abortions. It seems that in about half of the states where Democrats are in control, abortions are still possible.

After the Supreme Court verdict, a dozen progressive states – in addition to New York, including Vermont, Maryland, California and Washington – have already indicated that they want to protect the right to abortion.

New York is the first state to take concrete steps. With the Equal Rights Amendment, the politically progressive state wants to legally protect rights. The legal text for this goes further, he reports The New York Times. This prohibits the government from discriminating on numerous characteristics, including pregnancy.

The Senate approved the amendment. The state House of Representatives has yet to approve the text. Subsequently, the population can vote on the law in a referendum. The law could come into effect from 2024 if approved.

US President Joe Biden called the abolition of the nation’s right to abortion a “tragic mistake”. He said “women’s health and lives are at risk” because states can now decide whether abortion is allowed and what rules are associated with it.

The president said women living in states where abortion will soon be banned can travel to other states where abortion is permitted.
