New York authorities are looking for ways to speed up work permits for immigrants recently arrived in New York.
All of them cannot work legally in the Country.
“We have everything, what we need is work to have a place and give space to those who arrive, to leave here we have to have at least a month’s rent,” commented Miguel, a Colombian immigrant.
A legislative proposal by Senator Luis Sepúlveda proposes that they be granted a temporary permit to work after 45 days of arriving in the State.
“They want to work, they want to assist society, pay taxes, the problem is that they don’t have permission,” he said.
The legislation would apply only to those people who are formally requesting asylum.
“We are going to give permission to people who are seeking asylum, permission to start working 45 days after they apply,” he commented.
The measure would still have to be analyzed and voted on in the Senate.
However, there are some voices against it who point out that this power belongs only to the federal government.
“It is against the constitution, it is illegal because only the federal government can give work permits,” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis.
Separately, New York Governor Kathy Hochul reported that she is seeking to unblock work authorizations for immigrants at the federal level.
