New York Authorities Prepare for Influx of Immigrants, Including Children

New York authorities are preparing to receive “thousands and thousands” of immigrants shortly, in what is being described as one of the most challenging waves yet, as it will include a large number of children, City Hall sources reported.

State and city education leaders met virtually Monday to prepare for the expected large influx of new students.

The meeting was attended by State Education Department Commissioner Betty Rosa, New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks, and other officials rushing to address the issue as it rapidly approaches. the new school year.

The meeting discussed the possibility of dispersing the flood of new migrant families out into communities in upstate New York.

Summon educational authorities waiting for immigrant children

A City Council representative said in a statement: “Today, we are convening a meeting with representatives from the New York State Department of Education and Governor Hochul’s office to ensure that we are coordinating with school districts across the state as they we continue to receive a large number of asylum-seeking families every day.

“Our city has done and continues to do everything possible to manage this unprecedented humanitarian crisis, and we remain committed to working with our partners across the state to help these children and families.”

In a joint statement, New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young Jr. and Rosa also said the State Department of Education is committed to working with and assisting local governments and educational organizations to ensure that relocated migrant families, both adults and children, have access to educational services.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said last week in Albany that Rosa told her that some school systems “have more capacity than others” for migrant children.

“And you also want to make sure that the proper language skills are being taught,” Hochul said. “English as a second language, specialized teachers are needed, so not all schools are the best place for students.

“Therefore, there are some schools that have capacity, it would make more sense than others,” the governor said.

Hochul noted that his budget earmarked historic levels of funding for education statewide, totaling $34.5 billion for the 2023-24 school year, that could be used for new students arriving from the border.
