New York authorities opened a portal on August 21 to replace food assistance benefits for victims of theft and fraud.
The program will apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Those affected may request a refund of the money that has been stolen from them as of October 1, 2022.
Federal law allows states to use federal funds to replace electronically stolen benefits beginning October 1, 2022.
New Yorkers who have been victims of fraud will need to fill out an online form in order to access the refund.
The authorities point out that in order to access the benefit, people have to report the theft or fraud of which they were victims.

New Jersey also has a site to report the scam and access the reimbursement of SNAP resources.
Or, they can download the form and mail it to their county Board of Social Services.

Authorities reported that cardholders whose EBT card benefits were stolen before July 1, 2023 will have 60 days, that is, until August 30, 2023, to file a refund request.
Cardholders whose benefits are stolen after July 1, 2023 will have 30 days from the date they discover the theft to file a request.
