New York Authorities Announce Identification of Two More 9/11 Victims

New York, Sep 7 (EFE) .- The New York Medical Examiner’s Office announced on Tuesday that it has identified two new victims of the 9/11 attacks, information that is revealed a few days before the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack. .
Dorothy Morgan, from the town of Hempstead, east of New York City, is victim number 1,646 who has been identified, while 1,647 is a man whose identity has not been revealed at the request of his relatives.
Since October 2019, the New York authorities have not announced new identifications, which on this occasion have been possible through DNA analysis of the remains that were recovered from the scene of the event that claimed the lives of 2,753 people on September 11, 2001. .
More than 1,100 victims or 40% of the deceased have not yet been formally identified.
“20 years ago we promised the families of the World Trade Center that we would do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to identify their loved ones and, with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill that sacred obligation,” he said in a statement. New York City Chief Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson reported.
“No matter how long since September 11, 2001, we will never forget it, and we are committed to using all the tools at our disposal to ensure that everyone we lost can be reunited with their families,” he added.
The 9/11 victim identification effort is the largest and most complex forensic investigation in US history.
Recently, the Office of the Medical Examiner has adopted next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) technology, which has also been used in the identification of US military remains.
