New York announces a 5-year agreement with the largest union in the city

New York, Feb. 17 The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, announced this Friday that the city reached an agreement of more than five years with the Council of District 37 (DC 37), the largest union in the Big Apple and made up of public sector employees.

“This agreement will cover nearly 90,000 municipal employees, or a quarter of the city’s total unionized workforce,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.

This agreement includes salary increases of 3% the first four years and 3.25% in the last year, as well as a large investment in a child care fund, dedicated funds to improve retention and recruitment efforts, and a committee to explore flexible work options, such as remote work.

The parties also agreed that beginning July 1, 2023, each employee covered by this contract will earn at least $18 per hour, a rate higher than the $15 minimum wage.

“When you call 911 (emergency phone), there is a member of DC 37 on the other side. When your child crosses the street on the way to school, there is a member of DC 37 making sure they are safe. When you see your children walking through the cafeteria to get food, those people serving the food are members of DC 37. Every aspect of our lives is represented by the men and women of DC 37,” Adams said today.

The mayor stressed in his press conference that this agreement was especially important to him because his mother was part of DC 37.

This agreement has retroactive effects as of May 26, 2021, and its effects end on November 6, 2026. EFE
