NEW YORK – Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Sunday directed state agencies to prepare for a Possible emergency as a weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms, high winds and even snow to parts of the state beginning Monday morning.
According to the governor in a statement, the eastern parts of the capital and Mid-Hudson regions, as well as Long Island, have the highest probability of seeing wind gusts greater than 50 mph. In addition, the statement says, southern New York can expect to see 6 to 12 inches of snow for the next 36 to 48 hours.
The governor is asking New Yorkers to monitor local weather forecasts and prepare for potential damaging winds, power outages and minor flooding.
“With forecasts showing potentially severe weather in various areas across the state, I have directed state agencies to not only ensure that response personnel and assets are ready to support our local partners, but also remain contacted utilities to ensure power outages are addressed as quickly as possible, “Governor Cuomo said Sunday. “While the State is ready to address any issues this storm may cause, I also urge all New Yorkers to closely follow local forecasts and take steps to protect themselves, their families, and their property.” .
How is the State preparing?
The Department of Transportation
The State Department of Transportation will patrol state highways and respond to outages on Monday and run into the evening as needed. The Department has the following assets ready:
• 1,591 dump trucks
• 312 large magazines
• 79 chippers
• 61 tractors
• 20 motor graders
• 15 crew bucket trucks
Thruway Authority
Thruway Authority has 660 operators and supervisors ready to deploy 255 large snowplows, 98 medium snowplows, 11 snowplows and 60 loaders statewide with more than 124,000 tons of road salt.
Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
New York State police and park personnel are on alert and closely monitoring weather conditions and impacts.
Environmental Conservation Department
DEC’s environmental conservation police officers, rangers, emergency management personnel, and regional personnel are on alert and monitoring the developing situation and actively patrolling areas and infrastructure likely to be affected by severe weather. All available assets are ready to assist with any emergency response.
Public Service Department
New York Public Services has approximately 5,500 workers available to participate in damage assessment, response, and restoration efforts throughout New York State. Public Utilities Department staff will monitor utilities work during the storm event and ensure that utilities transfer the appropriate personnel to regions expected to experience the greatest impact.
State Police
The New York State Police have instructed all officers to remain vigilant and closely monitor conditions for any problems. Additional personnel will be dispatched to affected areas as needed.
