New York Agencies Ordered to Freeze Spending as State Faces Major Budget Gaps

New York agencies are being ordered to freeze spending in their budget proposals for the next fiscal year as the state faces major budget gaps.

Budget Director Blake Washington sent a letter to agency commissioners Wednesday telling them budget requests for next year should not exceed what was approved this year.

Budget gaps totaling $36 billion are projected over the next three years. The Division of Budget blames declining tax revenues and increased spending.

This year’s enacted budget was the highest ever at $229 billion.

The Division of the Budget suggests agencies try to find ways to save money by reviewing and scrutinizing programs.

The letter says Gov. Kathy Hochul wants to balance the budget without raising taxes or relying on reserves.

Agency budget requests are due in less than three weeks and the governor will present the Legislature with a budget proposal early next year.
