New York: a giant floating swimming pool soon to be built in the East River

It is an ambitious project that will see the light of day in New York! After more than ten years of reflection, the city has just given its approval for the construction of a floating Olympic swimming pool. Called “+ Pool”, it will be located in the East River, right next to the Manhattan Bridge. Its cost is estimated at over $ 20 million and will be partly funded through crowdfounding (i.e. crowdfunding).

A giant swimming pool for everyone

Referring to its name, + Pool, the pool will be shaped like the plus sign. This will make it possible to offer four very distinct pools in each of its arms: a space for children, one for sports, one for swimming lengths and a final one to relax. The pool will accommodate up to 300 people at the same time, for a total of 1,800 visitors per day.

+ Pool should remain open 15 weeks a year. However, the project designers plan to use solar energy to heat the swimmers’ space in cold weather. The inauguration is currently scheduled in two years.

A depolluting system

Thanks to an innovative filtration system, the approximately 1,080 cubic meter swimming pool will be filled with water from the East River. This system will make it possible to decontaminate the water entering the swimming pool, but also the river itself around the basin. According to the project organizers, + Pool should thus clean more than 2,300 m3 of river water per day.

Note that this filtration system has already been tested in New York by the creators of + Pool in 2014, in the Hudson River. A smaller version of the pool, called “Float Lab”, showed how it worked in real conditions. The organizers concluded that their system could “filter river water to share quality standards without using chemicals”.

So this is a great new project for New York City, after the opening of a new park this week, Little Island.
