Diamond Matthews, a young operator of the 311 service of the Mayor’s Office of New York, faces charges of attempted murder as a suspect in stabbing a man with her father during a fight in the laundry room of their residential building in Harlem.
Police arrested Matthews, 22, after she and her father allegedly attacked a man inside the laundry room of their building in the 5th Avenue, near W. 138th St.around 6 pm on December 26, prosecutors announced yesterday.

“I got into an argument with one of the guys doing the laundry and I asked my dad to come rescue me,” Matthews told police, according to court documents. “We started fighting and they pulled a knife on me, but I couldn’t see who pulled it out. The other one ended up being stabbed.”
He added that he went out into the hallway to look for his father after the fight. As she threw punches and kicks, she witnessed her father stab the victim repeatedly, nearly killing him, surveillance video police recovered from the scene shows. The injured 45-year-old was taken to a local hospital, where he is still recovering, he said. Daily News. It is not clear if he resides in the same building as the accused.
Matthews’ father ran away, authorities said without revealing his name. At Matthews’ arraignment Wednesday in Manhattan Criminal Court, prosecutors said that although she did not wield the knife, “hit the victim several times in the head while his father repeatedly stabbed the victim, clearly demonstrating that the defendant and his father shared a community of purpose.”
The victim “posed no imminent harm,” said Deputy District Attorney Joshua Larmon. This was Matthews’ first arrest and he was held on $20,000 bail.
Matthews is a telephone operator for the city’s Office of Technology and Innovation, an agency created last year by Mayor Eric Adams to manage the 311 system, among other tasks.
He had only worked for the agency for a year, city officials said. “The Office of Technology and Innovation is cooperating with authorities and the Office of Labor Relations on appropriate next steps in this matter,” a spokesperson said.
Domestic violence is common in New York City and surrounding areas, between relatives, roommates and partners, even with minor victims.
Every day in New York City, on average, about 747 incidents of domestic violence, including assaults, abuse, verbal abuse, and about 65 homicides annually.
