New York 1911: The population explodes, the economy is booming and new skyscrapers soar.
Historical recordings show life in the metropolis shortly before the outbreak of the First World War.
The Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern produced the films. The Museum of Modern Art in New York later publishes the project.
Now the trained engineer Ignacio Lopez-Francos colors the moving images.
The Spaniard uses an algorithm that compares black and white photos with color photos and learns from this which hues produce a particular color.
Lopez-Francos writes about the video:
“The everyday life in the city that was recorded here has a casual, almost idyllic quality.”
Famous landmarks are also featured: the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Iron Building.
And road traffic looked completely different more than 100 years ago.
Lopez-Francos brings history closer to us with the spectacular, color-coded images.
