Various municipalities in the Bible Belt make it possible to celebrate New Year’s Eve on Saturday, December 30. Think of bonfires or carbide shooting. In this way, Sunday rest in these predominantly Christian communities is not disturbed.
New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday this year. That is why the municipality of Staphorst announced in October that New Year’s Eve traditions are only allowed on Saturdays. There is a ban in Staphorst on Sundays.
The municipalities of Ede, Nunspeet and Barneveld are more flexible. New Year’s Eve traditions are allowed there on both Saturday and Sunday, but there are times attached to them.
For example, carbide shooting is allowed in Ede on Saturday, December 30 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. On Sundays this is only allowed from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM in view of the Sunday Law. That law prohibits holding “public entertainments” on Sundays before 1 p.m.
“This way, the different communities in our municipality can make their own choice when they celebrate New Year’s Eve traditions,” a municipal spokesperson explains.
People in the municipality of Barneveld are also allowed to shoot carbide on Saturdays; between 12:00 and 16:00. They specifically mention that this applies to people aged eighteen or older with an exemption.
In the municipality of Nunspeet the bonfire is on December 30 this year. There too, Sunday rest is the reason for the move.
