New Year’s Eve Traditions Restricted to Saturday in Staphorst Due to Sunday Rest

Oct 20, 2023 at 3:57 PM Update: 29 minutes ago

Anyone who wants to ring in 2023 in Staphorst with a bonfire or carbide shooting must do so on December 30. Because New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, the municipality only allows these traditional festivities on Saturdays.

Traditions such as carbide shooting and bonfires are part of New Year’s Eve in Staphorst, the municipality says. But Staphorst has many Protestant Christian residents who value Sunday rest. That is reason to bring forward the expressions of joy on Sunday, December 31, by one day.

Bonfires require an exemption or permit and will only be granted for Saturday, December 30. Carbide shooting is allowed by the municipality without an exemption, but only on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

It is not yet known what other municipalities with many Protestant Christian residents do around New Year’s Day. In Kampen, carbide shooting is allowed during the day on December 31.
