City officials are taking steps to ensure that all spectators who plan to spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square can do so safely.
It is a previous celebration to welcome 2024. Confetti and joy flooded this part of Times Square, where tourists already fill every corner, and on Sunday hundreds of thousands are expected in this place.
Miguel Ángel Blasco and his family are staying in a hotel in Times Square, they will have direct access to the area during the last day of the year, an area that will be protected with extra police security in each access point to the end of the year event.
“To all of us who are housed there, some bracelets to be able to have free access to it, because you can see that the area is going to be very controlled because it is very controlled and of course, logically we are strong there and to be able to enter like this. To me all the security measures always seem good to me,” says Miguel à ngel Blasco Boscá, a Spanish tourist.
Both the FBI and the Police Department will monitor possible threats for Sunday. The uniformed personnel have had an alert activated since October 7, due to the demonstrations over the Israel-Hamas conflict. And although authorities are concerned about lone wolf attacks, they insisted that “there are no specific reports of any threat.”
“They are very good measures. Since humanity is in very difficult times, we have to be careful and we have to protect ourselves,” says Luis Oseguera, a Honduran tourist.
Among the safety tips that the city police have indicated for people who plan to celebrate in Times Square are: carry your purse or wallet close to your body, put your wallet in your front pocket, carry cash and only The credit cards you could use also ask you to take into account that pushing in crowds may be attempted robbery.
“It seems very correct to me. In other words, when there is such a large crowd of people who are going to come from all over, but here and everywhere in the world they have to increase security measures, but that is a normal and ordinary thing” says María José Martínez Magna, a Spanish tourist.
Likewise, the authorities have prohibited certain items, which if you bring them they will not allow you to enter this area, such as umbrellas, backpacks, folding chairs, blankets and alcoholic beverages.
“Let the war end, there is a lot of war, a lot of corruption, a lot of crime, let it stop, let peace come,” says Pascual Lugo, a Dominican tourist.
That is the wish of the vast majority of people we spoke to, that 2024 be a year of peace and prosperity for everyone.
