New Year’s Eve run between Soest and Werl: around 7,300 runners on the route

[Update] Soest / Werl – Kreis Soest: It is the feeling at the finish that makes the New Year’s Eve run from Werl to Soest something special. The visitors cheered frenetically on the successful hunt for the course records.

With success: Women’s winner Laura Hottenrott set a new best time over the 15 kilometers. The first runner at the finish was Hendrik Pfeiffer.

The major sporting event before the turn of the year was a complete success. Faster times than last year and a number of participants that has not existed since 2007. 7426 runners, walkers and hikers started the 38th New Year’s Eve run.

The fastest

Hendrik Pfeiffer (TV Wattenscheid 01) was not allowed to breathe through the finish for less than ten seconds, when he had to answer the first questions. And the athlete did this without any problems, even though he had previously run the second fastest time that a man has ever completed from Werl to Soest. Pfeifer was on the track for 44.27 minutes – and therefore faster than team-mate and last year’s winner Amanal Petros.

“I like the cold. I like to run in cool weather when it’s still a little wet. I like that, ”said Pfeiffer, who wanted to represent Petros with dignity – he succeeded. The lead over the second-placed Habtom Tedros (TG Neuss) was more than 50 seconds.

For women, the favorites left the field early. Fabienne Königstein (MTG Mannheim), who won last year as Fabienne Amrhein, ran almost eight kilometers together with Laura Hottenrott (TV Wattenscheid 01). Then Hottenrott could grow impressively. “I’m in a better mood than in 2015 and 2016,” said the winner later. Even then, Hottenrott had won the New Year’s run twice in a row. Now she put another slip on it and pulverized the course record. “In the past few years, the run has always brought me a lot of luck. And with the result, I’m going into the next season.

Manuel Görlich (LSF Münster) and Julia Kümpers (Aachener TG) each finished in third place.

Strong number of participants

“6084 runners, 318 children and 1026 hikers.” New Year’s Eve organizer Ingo Schaffranka was happy about the large number of participants. “I really loved the time of women,” said Schaffranka about Laura Hottenrott’s track record. “All in all a great running result.”

Great audience

The spectators are the salt in the soup at the New Year’s Eve run. They make the run special. Even before the first runners crossed the line, the spectators tried the wave, animated by the moderator duo Dirk Hildebrand and Hendrik Frevert, who managed to greet many runners with their first names at the finish. Then everything went quickly – and the audience was no longer out of cheers. Initially, Lutz Holste (LG Dorsten) enthused with a fantastic time over the five-kilometer distance – he literally flew away from his competitors.

Then Pfeiffer and Hottenrott put one more on top. Respect was also paid to every other runner. Children’s hands that expected a handshake, families with posters or friends with a beer in hand are waiting for their runners. But also on the route – in Westonnnen, Ostönnen and Ampen – the spectators put their best effort into it. Many helpers provided hot and cold drinks for the runners.

Five-kilometer run

With a fabulous time of 15:16 minutes and more than a minute and a half ahead, Lutz Holste from LG Dorsten won the five-kilometer race from Ampen to Soest. The fastest woman was his teammate Teresa Schulte-Wermlinhoff (LG Dorsten) with a time of 18:04 minutes. The best-placed domestic athlete was Max Picht, who plays handball on Soester TV in the Oberliga. He finished fourth in 17:10 minutes. The best female runner from Soest and the surrounding area was Lara Voss from SV Wasserfreunde Soest. She needed 20:03 minutes for the “five” and was the second fastest woman. A total of 936 starters took part.
