New Year’s Eve Chaos in Zaandam: Fires, Violence, and Arrests

In Zaandam, a fire was set on New Year’s Eve (from Sunday to Monday) while passers-by were pelted with fireworks. When the police arrived on the scene, officers were also pelted with heavy fireworks.

The Mobile Unit was deployed to restore calm and have the fire extinguished by the fire brigade, according to the police. The Mobile Unit took action twice in Poelenburg.

A total of 13 suspects have been arrested. The suspects were between 14 and 19 years old. The suspects are said to be free again, according to nu.nl.

Ambulance workers had a less busy night than last year, according to the control room of the Zaanstreek Waterland Safety Region. They took action 87 times during the New Year’s Eve throughout Zaanstreek Waterland. That is a decrease of approximately 15% compared to last year. There have been no reports of aggression against ambulance service employees.

Oostzaan, 2 fire brigade calls and 4 ambulance trips were required. In Wormerland there was one fire and 7 ambulance trips. In Zaanstad, the fire brigade had to respond 21 times, while 45 ambulance trips were reported.
