During New Year’s Eve, firebombs were thrown at the police in East. An agent said this on Instagram.

She publishes a conversation with a colleague there. That colleague wrote: “The amount of incendiary bombs that missed us in the East is not normal. A case of going well instead of well done.” The same officer then clarified: “Cobra with gasoline on it. Trying to lure us into the intersection and throw us.”
Flammable substances
A police spokesperson confirms that there is indeed information that ‘heavy fireworks with flammable substances attached to them were thrown’. The police previously announced that four officers were injured, three of whom suffered hearing damage from fireworks or burns. A fourth was punched in the face.
Things went wrong in East, including on the Isulindeweg. Footage from a local resident showed rioting youths throwing items and fireworks at police cars. Ultimately, riot police cleared the street and also used police dogs.

The officer who made the call believes that punishment should be harsher. She has no confidence that perpetrators will receive heavy sentences, as has been said several times in the past. “Now seventeen years later, I have experienced it myself (several times) and seen and heard it up close so many times that I no longer really believe in it.”
Chaos
She also writes that it is difficult to arrest perpetrators. “Because it is simply not always possible/safe/tactical to make an arrest in the chaos and crowds. Or, for example, you do not see who threw the fireworks that exploded next to you.”
Another officer, who was part of the Mobile Unit during New Year’s Eve, also believes that punishment should be harsher. “Because I have been working for the police for many years now and unfortunately I see that things still go wrong here.”

It was also restless around the Beukenplein in East during New Year’s Eve. According to a witness, illegal fireworks were tied to bottles of gasoline. “However, a car just drove past. You see the car that was completely hit. The airbags had gone off and the driver (an older man) was very shocked. But otherwise okay.”

Before the service, the riot police officer and his colleagues received a warning. “Our commander said, ‘colleagues are going to get hurt today, that’s for sure. But we are going to do everything we can to get home safely.”
Across the city, 85 suspects were arrested.
