New Year’s Eve Bells: TV Viewership Declines in Spain

A total of 15.2 million Spaniards followed the traditional New Year’s Eve bells through television, one million less than last year, when 16.2 million people followed them and far from what was achieved in 2020 when the 21 million people. These were the least watched chimes on television since 2017.

This is reflected in a study prepared by Barlovento Comunicación on Kantar Media data, published this Monday, January 2, 2024.

This year the screen share has reached 93.3 percent in the 28 channels that broadcast the bells according to Kantar coding, which represents a decrease of 1.4%. Total television consumption was 16.3 million, which represents a decrease of 814,000 (-5%) compared to 2022 when 17.1 million viewers were registered. Regarding the viewer profile, 54% were women and 34% of the audience were between 45 and 64 years old, 27% were over 64 years old and 21% were between 25 and 44 years old.

According to the average audience history of the last seven years, the minute of the chimes in 2023, between midnight and midnight, was the least watched, below that of 2022 in which the average audience was 16.2 million viewers, in 2018 with 16.5 million and in 2019 with 16.6.

On the contrary, those of 2020 were the most viewed in the last seven years with 21 million average audience, followed by 2021 with 18.6 million and 2017 with 18.3 million.
