The CCP virus recombinant virus XE was first reported by the UK on January 19 this year. The virus is a new variant viral strain produced by genetic recombination of the two strains in the same patient after the patient was simultaneously infected with the Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 variant strains. According to current data, the XE virus variant has a 10% greater community transmission advantage than the more prevalent Omicron BA.2 variant.

It is not uncommon for this type of gene recombination between different mutant viruses to generate new mutant viruses. Currently, there are also two variants of XF and XD produced by the recombination of Delta virus strain and Omicron BA.1 virus strain, but the number of infection cases caused by these two recombinant strains is low.

According to the UK Health Office (UKHSA), 637 cases of XE infection have been confirmed in the UK so far. All recombinant variants will continue to be closely monitored on a regular basis through surveillance and genome sequencing.
