Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter and theorist. On March 7, it will be 150 years since he was born in Amersfoort. He is seen as a pioneer in abstract and non-figurative art. His later works with geometric compositions in red, yellow, blue, white and black are particularly well known. They served as a source of inspiration for artists, but also architects and designers.
In the beginning of his career he worked in Amsterdam. At that time he still mainly made figurative work, including portraits. When he moved to Paris in 1912, he was influenced by the cubism of Picasso and Bracke.
Mondrian was a very spiritual person. He believed that artists should search for a higher, invisible, cosmic reality through abstract compositions. In 1917 he joined the art movement De Stijl, which wanted to radically reform art. Mondrian also lived and worked for several years in New York, where he died in 1944.
