A new work permit program for international students in Canada is accepting applications as of Wednesday.
The federal government announced the program this month as part of an initiative to convince more people to settle in Canada permanently.
Former students with post-graduation work permits that have expired or will soon expire will now be able to apply for open work permits, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino explained at the time.
The program will give those affected an additional 18 months across the country to look for work.
The ministry estimates that approximately 52,000 graduates could benefit from this program.
Sarom Rho, who is leading a student migrant campaign with the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, says this “massive” change will benefit many, but others are still being left behind.
