Greek firefighters are fighting a major forest fire on the island of Lesvos for the second day in a row. But several fires have now also broken out in the west of the Peloponnese region. A village had to be evacuated because of the fire.

On Lesbos, residents of the southern part of the island have been summoned to seek a safe haven. Houses and cars have gone up in flames. Two villages in the area have been evacuated. 141 fires have been identified across Greece in 24 hours.

The wildfire in and around the Dadia National Park, in the northeast of Greece, has also been able to spread today. According to the Minister of Civil Protection, the fire brigade is hindered by the changing wind and the difficult terrain.

The smoke development on Lesvos was so great yesterday that space satellites were able to capture it:

The risk of wildfires will remain high in the coming days. Temperatures of up to 40 degrees are expected until at least the end of the week.

In Spain, where dozens of fires raged last week, the situation seems to be improving. There are concerns about a new wildfire on the Canary Island of Tenerife.

The flames have destroyed more than 2000 hectares of nature. Hundreds of residents of the northern coastal area have been evacuated. According to the regional authorities, the extinguishing work is difficult, partly due to the very high temperatures.

Several hundred people have also been evacuated in Italy because of the fire. That happened at Gorizia, near the border with Slovenia. About 2000 firefighters and volunteers are there fighting the flames. The extinguishing work is complicated by the presence of explosives left behind from the First World War. For this reason, extinguishing is mainly done from the air.
