New WhatsApp features: polls, communities and group sizes

The WhatsApp news service has announced new features. This includes chat polls and so-called communities. What is it about.

The messaging service that WhatsApp has in one blog post announced on Thursday an extensive update with new features, which should be available to all users in the coming months.

Among the new functions are the so-called community. These are grouped group chats that are managed together. Administrators of different group chats can create communities. Group members can then send messages to multiple groups within a community instead of copying a message to the groups individually.

As an example of a community, WhatsApp cites school principals for whom the feature should facilitate communication. This allows you to connect groups with parents and groups for special courses, extracurricular activities or volunteering.

Communities can be selected in the main WhatsApp menu. Next to the “Chat” tab, a Icon with three abstract people appears, which takes you to the communities.

Three more new features in WhatsApp

Regardless of communities, WhatsApp will be rolling out more features within groups in the coming weeks.

  • Larger groups on voice calls: Video calls should be possible in groups of up to 32 participants.
  • Largest participants: number in groups: With the new update, you can add up to 1,024 users to a group.
  • Chat polls: In the future, polls can be created in groups, with the help of which it is easier to question different opinions.

Even with this update, WhatsApp guarantees end-to-end encryption of messages and calls. However, some people choose not to use WhatsApp. This article lists the alternatives to the messaging service: Alternatives to WhatsApp: an overview of safe messengers.
