“New Wave of Covid-19 Cases and Respiratory Viruses in Paraguay: Urgent Measures Needed”

To prepare the masks. A new wave of Covid-19 seems to be rising on the horizon, with the number of people affected increasing.

In the weekly report of the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Guillermo Sequera commented that 100 new cases were recorded last week.

There was also a greater number of people hospitalized due to the virus that caused the pandemic.

There are 25 hospitalized patients due to SARS-CoV-2. Three deaths were also added.

This could be the start of a new wave of the disease, which would be the sixth in the country. This situation is not only in Paraguay. Other countries in the region are also seeing the rise in cases, said the person in charge of Health Surveillance.

This situation is added to the largest number of consultations due to other respiratory viruses.

“We are acquiring the pattern of waves (of these diseases) that we had before the pandemic,” revealed Sequera.

Before each winter, the wave of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) appears. This leads especially minors to therapies, since this virus causes bronchiolitis in young children, he described.

Every year, except for the two that the pandemic forced greater isolation, there are significant waves of diseases caused by RSV.

He mentioned that it is a month and a half away from children starting to get sick from said virus. For this reason, she urges parents to be careful.

“Hopefully soon we will have a vaccine for this virus that affects young children above all.”

As early as July, other pathogens that cause important respiratory conditions begin to predominate.

During this period, the predominance of influenza A is recorded.

Sequera mentioned that the wave of Covid-19 could add to the waves of other respiratory diseases.

Taking into account the not very encouraging forecast, especially for vulnerable sectors, he urges the implementation of care measures.

Among them are immunization through biologics. Those vaccines against Covid and influenza are free in hospitals.

Chikungunya: There is a decline in cases
The decline of the chikungunya epidemic is already seen in the country’s capital. The same is happening in the Central Department. The same thing happens in other regions, except in the South of the country. The updated report indicates that 115 people died from arbovirosis. In total, there are 206 hospitalized.
