When classes resume after the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) for the holidays, a new wave of chemical attacks has begun in girls’ schools in Iran.
Thousands of young girls have suddenly become ill – they start coughing and choking, fighting for every breath. Most of the poisoned girls were taken to hospitals.
The case of the latest attack was recorded on Wednesday, April 19, at Nasiri and Abuzar high schools in the city of Urmia in northwestern Iran.
The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) tracks and maps the extent of chemical attacks on schools. So far, 406 attacks have been recorded across Iran.
FDD senior advisor and financial economist Saeed Gaseminejad adds that the data could be two to three times higher than reported.
The first reported poisoning was reported in the city of Qom in November 2022. Gaseminejad points out that the first 15 chemical attacks took place in Qom, but in March the attacks peaked across the country. They arrived only during the New Year holidays.
