The entry of the Delta variant in India had major consequences from April to June last year – when tens of thousands lost their lives and hospitals were overloaded. In some places corpses had to be burned in parks, as the crematoria had burst capacity.
At most, over 400,000 new cases of infection were registered every day.
Now more people fear that the country with a total of 1.35 billion inhabitants is facing a new wave of serious infections, as the omicron variant is being detected in more and more places.

Venter tsunami
1892 omicron cases have so far been confirmed in the country – most detected in Mumbai and the capital New Delhi. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar says according to The Guardian that he expects a “tsunami” of infections in the future.
The city, which is the most populous in India, currently registers over 15,000 cases of infection per day. If the daily number of infections exceeds 20,000, new measures will be relevant, the mayor warns.
Several cities have already introduced measures to curb the spread of infection. New Delhi now bans large gatherings for Christmas and New Year.

Can get big increase
WHO chief researcher Soumya Swaminathan warns that the omicron variant could overwhelm Indian hospitals – even if it turns out to be milder than the delta variant.
Some studies have in fact suggested that omicron gives a milder course of the disease than delta. At present, however, there is considerable uncertainty associated with the properties of the variant.
– India can get a big increase in infection. The next two weeks will provide answers to how the development will be, she says, and adds that deleting the micron is not “a cold”.
64 percent of the population in India has received two doses of the corona vaccine, while 90 percent has received one dose.
