New sorting bins will replace the bags that were used until now to collect recyclable waste in 67 municipalities in the west of Greater Reims. They will be picked up every week instead of every fortnight to improve waste management.
It’s a small revolution for the nearly 17,000 affected households that had to use sorting bags until now. A device that predated the creation of Greater Reims and that the community decided to change to harmonize waste management practices in the agglomeration.
Increase the amount of recyclable waste
With this new collection method, the community hopes to encourage people to sort more, and better: ” When we picked up every fortnight and the bags were full, people might have the reflex to put the surplus in the household garbage. Tomorrow, with one collection per week, residents will put more in their yellow bin, and more easily »Comments Emmanuel Debaty, Director of waste and cleaning for Greater Reims.
160 tons of additional waste will not go to incineration
By comparing with the municipalities that already collect their yellow bins once a week, the community has calculated that it could collect some. 160 tonnes more than currently, or 12% of the tonnage picked up in the area: ” This is 160 tons more waste that will not go to incineration, so the environmental aspect is positive He adds.
To prepare for the implementation of this new collection on January 1, 2022, four agents of the agglomeration go door to door among residents to better understand their waste sorting practices: ” We try to assess the amount of waste produced in a household to choose the size of their sorting bin, but we also take the opportunity to assess that of household waste, and talk to residents about composting »Help Emmanuel Debates.
Harmonize practices
This reorganization makes it possible to have the same waste management everywhere and to adapt the collection routes: ” Some tours were more than busy than others, especially in towns where the population had increased sharply, so the cards had to be reshuffled. »Explains Pascal Lorin, Vice-president of Greater Reims for the collection and treatment of waste.
This new management will also allowimprove the working conditions of agents : « Our pickers did about 600 bag raisings per round. Switching to rolling bins, with trucks fitted with container carriers that automatically empty and lower the bin automatically, this also helps to preserve the health of the agents ” complete Pascal Lorin.
The first bins will be delivered to residents at the start of the year. The objective is to gradually equip all the municipalities concerned by September 2022.
