The offer of the eighth generation VW Golf is gradually expanding. The latest variant comes in the form of today’s traditional Golf R.

The Volkswagen Golf R has been on the brand’s offer since 2002, so when the Volkswagen R division is currently significantly expanding its range of “eR models” (the new T-Roc R, Touareg R, Arteon R, Tiguan R), it was obvious that the new generation of Golf R would definitely come. Now it’s here in all its beauty and we have to say, it’s worth it!
At the time of the premiere, Osmičkový Golf caused some controversy in terms of its appearance, but in the case of Golf R, I must say that all the criticism so far goes aside from my point of view. The new front bumper with splitter, side wings and more pronounced cooling vents is simply worth it.
And it’s even better at the rear, where there are no four exhaust tailpipes typical of the Golf R today. The trunk lid is then decorated with the new R logo and there is also a distinctive, double roof spoiler at an additional cost. By the way, as far as the exhaust is concerned, the standard sports can again replace the solution from Akrapovič. Such an exhaust system is titanium, which makes it seven kilograms lighter than the default solution, and thanks to the flaps, it wants to provide an incredible sound.

The interior combines a digital instrument panel with a 10 “touch screen of the multimedia system as standard, which made it possible to bring distinctive graphics for the Golf R. The car” greets “the driver with the R logo. even between a centrally located tachometer or a special horizontally oriented tachometer.
Of course, there are also sports seats, which in this case have an integrated headrest. The steering wheel was also redesigned. On the one hand, it has larger gear levers (for example, Cupry Formentor, for example), on the other hand, there is a new R button for selecting driving modes. In addition, pressing it hard will take you straight to Race mode.
From the point of view of technology under the hood, this is no big surprise. In this case, however, it is the most powerful version of this series, because the engine is tuned to 235 kW (320 hp) and 420 Nm. It is thus 14 kW more powerful and 20 Nm more powerful than its predecessor.

The result of this power is the fact that the new Golf R accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 4.7 seconds and travels at a top speed of 250 km / h. However, when ordering the R-Performance package, the maximum can be increased up to 270 km / h.
A bit disappointing, however, may be the fact that the Golf R will be available as standard in Europe with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (version DQ381); At the same time, it will be offered in the USA. Logically, the standard is also all-wheel drive, a typical element of the Golf R.
However, it is a new solution with R-Performance torque vectoring. In addition to the traditional differential, it includes a newly designed rear axle with two separate multi-disc clutches for connecting the rear wheels, which send engine power to which wheel as needed. The result is suppression of understeer behavior and increased agility when cornering. The brand management itself even talks about the funniest Golf ever.
The behavior of the ATV can be adjusted in several modes, and Drift and Special modes can also be purchased at an additional cost. The first allows you to drift with the Golf R, while the second adapts the car’s settings to the driving conditions on the North Loop of the Nürburgring. It needs special chassis tuning, while the machine downshifts so that it has the highest possible speed to a lower gear. By the way, it was on the Ring that the novelty set an amazing time. The value of 7:51 is an incredible 19 seconds faster than its predecessor. And by the way, ESP can be turned off completely.

Another standard feature of the new Golf R is also adaptive shock absorbers. By the way, thanks to the Vehicle Dynamics Manager system, they work closely with the ATV for even more capable behavior. By the way, the chassis has also changed. It is reduced by 20 mm compared to the standard model, the deflection of the front axle has also changed for more neutral behavior, while the aluminum subframe reduces the weight of the front axle by three kilograms. The brake system is also new.
The new Volkswagen Golf R will go on sale soon, appearing in the car’s first markets at the end of this month. The novelty has so far been introduced in the form of a hatchback, but it will almost certainly be complemented by a station wagon. After all, the brand’s management claims that the previous Golf R Variant was extremely successful in sales, so it would be a shame not to repeat this success.
